India's Premium Airline

Vistara was a full-service Indian airline based in Gurgaon with its hub at Indira Gandhi International Airport. The company was a joint venture between Indian investment company Tata Sons (51%) and Singapore-based carrier Singapore Airlines (49%). The goal was ambitious – to offer a premium air travel experience for high-class business travelers in India's civil aviation market.

This airline no longer exists, yet it is a success story that shows no signs of ending. Aircraft in this livery continue to soar through the skies, appearing on airport aprons, with passengers still buying tickets. How is this possible, you might ask? This is India, I would answer – here nothing disappears forever, simply being reborn in a new incarnation.

In India, everything carries deep meaning – dance, music, clothing, words. The airline's name "Vistara" derives from the Sanskrit word "Vistaar," meaning "boundless expanse." It most precisely reflected the company's philosophy – a commitment to continuous expansion and providing passengers with a sense of limitless freedom in flight.

The airline's logo is rendered in elegant shades of purple and gold. In Indian culture, these colors are traditionally associated with the highest spheres of life, from material wealth to deep spirituality. They became Vistara's primary brand colors, symbolizing the refinement the company sought to embody in every aspect of its service.

Takeoff

The airline began operations on January 9, 2015, with its first flight from Delhi to Mumbai, entering a market traditionally dominated by budget carriers. This was a bold move, as the Indian aviation market at the time was characterized by fierce price competition and the dominance of low-cost carriers. However, Vistara chose a different strategy, placing its bet on service quality, comfort, and a personalized approach to every passenger. The idea worked.

From the very start of its flights, Vistara delivered outstanding results. In its first month of operation, the airline achieved an on-time departure rate of over 90% – the best among all Indian carriers. This was a particularly impressive achievement for a new airline just beginning its operations. The company quickly gained popularity: within seven months, half a million passengers had been transported, confirming the original strategy built on quality service.

Vistara became the first airline in India to offer premium economy class on domestic flights. This was a revolutionary step, allowing passengers to choose an intermediate option between standard economy and business class. Aircraft cabins were divided into three classes: Economy, Premium Economy, and Business. Each class offered a corresponding level of comfort, dining, and additional services.

It is worth noting that particular attention was paid to in-flight dining. Menus were developed by renowned chefs and included both traditional Indian dishes and international cuisine. Passengers were offered freshly prepared meals rather than standard reheated sets, which was a rarity for domestic flights.

Fleet and Route Network

The company's fleet consisted of modern Airbus A320 family aircraft and Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, which were used on both domestic and international routes. The choice of these aircraft types was driven by their fuel efficiency, reliability, and high level of passenger comfort. The modern wide-body Dreamliners allowed Vistara to offer an unprecedented level of comfort on long-haul routes, thanks to increased cabin humidity, reduced noise levels, and more spacious seats.

For a brief period, the airline operated nine Boeing 737-800s acquired from the defunct Jet Airways. However, the natural drive toward fleet standardization led to these aircraft being retired from service after three years. Whatever one might say, business interests always prevail.

The carrier served more than 30 routes across India, including major cities – Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, and others. The international route network included destinations such as Singapore, Dubai, Bangkok, Kathmandu, Colombo, and London. Moreover, through its partnership with Singapore Airlines, Vistara had access to the global Star Alliance network via codeshare agreements, expanding travel options for its passengers. The gradual expansion of its route geography demonstrated the company's ambitions to become not only a leading domestic carrier but also a significant player in the international market.

Premium Service

Vistara launched its own loyalty program, Club Vistara, which allowed passengers to accumulate points for flights and redeem them for tickets, class upgrades, and other privileges. The program offered three membership tiers – Club Vistara, Silver, and Gold – with increasing benefits at each level.

One of the key factors behind Vistara's success was its corporate culture, built on Indian hospitality traditions and international service standards. Cabin crew underwent intensive training that covered not only standard safety procedures but also the nuances of premium customer service. The staff uniform, designed by renowned designers, combined traditional Indian motifs with contemporary elegance.

Throughout its relatively short history, Vistara earned numerous awards for service quality. The airline regularly received recognition from international aviation organizations and rating agencies. Among its accolades were recognition as the best airline in India, high marks for in-flight dining quality, cabin comfort, and customer service. These awards confirmed that the company's strategy of creating a premium product in the Indian market had been successful.

Despite its achievements, Vistara faced typical challenges. The Indian aviation market remained highly competitive, with constant pricing pressure from budget carriers. The COVID-19 pandemic had a serious impact on the aviation industry worldwide, and Vistara was no exception. However, the company adapted to the new reality by implementing enhanced sanitary safety measures.

Merger with Air India

Let us briefly digress from our main subject and take a short journey into the history of another airline. India's flagship carrier, known today as Air India, was founded in 1932 by J. R. D. Tata (Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata, 1904–1993) as Tata Airlines. In 1953, the airline was nationalized by the Indian government and renamed Air India. Given that the airline had been incurring losses since 2006 following its merger with Indian Airlines, a privatization process was initiated in 2017, ultimately resulting in ownership of the airline returning to Tata Group in 2022.

In November 2022, following Air India's return to Tata Group control, the merger of Vistara with Air India was announced. This was not an acquisition but a merger of two equal, kindred airlines, creating a powerful aviation holding capable of competing with the world's leading carriers. The integration process was carefully planned and took nearly two years. This transition period allowed for the smooth integration of the two airlines' operations, minimizing inconvenience for passengers.

The process was completed on November 12, 2024, when Vistara operated its final flight under its own brand, transferring all operations to Air India. The merger created one of India's largest carriers with an expanded route network and modernized fleet. The new company gained access to an extensive route network, a combined aircraft fleet, and the ability to offer a more diverse range of products and services.

The Vistara aircraft that have joined the Air India fleet are for now retaining their distinctive livery with purple and gold elements – until the next scheduled maintenance and repainting in Air India's corporate colors. So we can still spot the Vistara livery at airports around the world.

Legacy

Over its relatively brief history – less than ten years – Vistara left a vivid mark on India's aviation industry as a symbol of premium service. The company demonstrated that there is genuine demand for quality air travel in the Indian market, and that Indian airlines are capable of meeting international service standards.

The Vistara experience showed that combining Indian hospitality, the managerial expertise of Tata Group, and the operational standards of Singapore Airlines can create a truly outstanding product. Many of the innovations introduced by Vistara – including the emphasis on service quality and passenger comfort – live on within the merged Air India, contributing to its transformation into a modern global carrier.

The Vistara brand will be remembered as proof that a new airline can successfully enter a highly competitive market by steadfastly adhering to its principles of quality and service.
