Japan Airlines Co., Ltd. is the flag carrier of Japan. JAL is headquartered in Shinagawa, Tokyo. Its main hubs are Tokyo's Narita and Haneda airports, as well as Osaka's Kansai and Itami airports. The original Japan Airlines Co. was established on 1 August 1951, with the government of Japan recognising the need for a reliable air transportation system. In 1953, it became the national airline of Japan. After over three decades of service and expansion, the airline was fully privatised in 1987. In April 1976, the airline bought its first McDonnell Douglas DC-10-40 three-engine jet aircraft for its growing routes within Japan and to other countries.
