Alitalia, officially Alitalia-Aerolinee Italiane Internazionali, was Italy’s national flag carrier, founded on May 5, 1947. Headquartered in Rome, it operated from 1957 to 2021, serving over 80 destinations across Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Americas. The airline merged with Linee Aeree Italiane in 1957 and became a major international carrier, transitioning to an all-jet fleet by 1970. Alitalia ceased operations in 2021, succeeded by ITA Airways. The airline's Boeing 747 operations began with the -100 series in 1970, expanding significantly with the -200. The airliner, registered I-DEMB, was Alitalia's fifth “Jumbojet” and the third of the -200 series. Delivered in 1972 and bearing the name "Carlo Del Prete", it was operated by the airline for more than eight years.
