Registration: PH-BFT Named: Tokyo Type: 747-406M Engines: 4 × GE CF6-80C2B1F Serial Number: 28459 First flight: May 1, 1997
KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, founded in 1919 as the world’s oldest airline, began operating the Boeing 747 in 1971 with the 747-200B (PH-BUA “Mississippi”), launching its first flight to New York. These aircraft, seating 353 passengers, became the backbone of KLM’s long-haul fleet. In 1989, KLM introduced the Boeing 747-400, including the 747-400M combi variant, which remained in service until 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic hastened the retirement of the 747-400 from passenger operations in March 2020, though three 747-400M aircraft briefly returned for cargo flights. The last 747-400 left the fleet in October 2020. Today, KLM’s fleet comprises Boeing 777, 787, and Airbus A320neo, A330, and A350 aircraft, fully phasing out the 747.
