All Nippon Airways Co., Ltd., is the largest airline in Japan. Its headquarters are located in Shiodome City Center in the Shiodome area of Minato ward of Tokyo. It operates services to both domestic and international destinations. ANA bought its first widebody aircrafts, six Lockheed L-1011s, in November 1971. The aircraft entered service on the Tokyo-Okinawa route in 1974. Initially, the carrier had ordered McDonnell Douglas DC-10s but cancelled the order at the last minute and switched to Lockheed. ANA operated 21 of these jets as the main aircraft for trunk lines and major local routes and also used it on scheduled short-haul international flights from 1986. Known informally as the Tristar, it was retired from service in November 1995.
