Lufthansa, Germany's largest airline, together with its subsidiaries, ranks second in Europe for the number of passengers carried. It is also one of the five founding members of the Star Alliance. Headquartered in Cologne, Lufthansa's main operating base, known as the Lufthansa Aviation Center, is situated at Frankfurt am Main Airport, the airline's primary hub. An additional hub operates at Munich Airport, alongside a Flight Control Center. The company was established on January 6, 1953, under the name Aktiengesellschaft für Luftverkehrsbedarf (Luftag) by employees of the erstwhile Deutsche Luft Hansa, Germany's national airline founded in 1926. In 1954, Luftag adopted the corporate identity of the former flagship carrier, embracing the name and logo of Luft Hansa.
