Aeroflot – Soviet Airlines was the flag carrier of the Soviet Union and is one of the oldest airlines in the world, tracing its history back to 1923. During the Soviet era, Aeroflot was the only the Soviet national airline and the largest airline in the world. Its flights were mainly concentrated around the Soviet Union, but the airline also had an international network covering five continents. In Soviet times, the AN-24 was one of the most popular aircraft and provided a third of passenger traffic in the country. The reason for the high demand for the liner was its ability to land on small unprepared airfields and ground.
