Its popular name, Alitalia, blended the Italian words ali (wings) and Italia (Italy). It started operations on 5 May 1947. Alitalia aircraft have covered numerous special liveries, both for promotional and commemorative purposes. The first aircraft to take on a special color was the Boeing 747-200 I-DEMF, from April 1997 to September 1999, it flew in promoting the Baci Perugina livery.
